A group of diseases causing muscle weakness at birth. Several defined genetic mutations cause muscles to break down faster than they can repair or grow. A child with CMD may have various neurological or physical impairments. Some children never gain the ability to walk, while others lose the ability as they grow older. What Is Motor Neuron Disease? What Is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Or Lou Gehrig’s Disease?
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a serious and incurable form of progressive neurodegeneration - over time the nerves in the spine and brain progressively lose function. In the case of motor neuron disease, motor neurons - types of nerve cells - are affected. The renowned English physicist, Stephen Hawking, and guitar virtuoso Jason Becker are living with motor neuron disease.
